Product Description - Overview
ColorCube is a color-graphics, add-on, DOS based productivity software
package that interfaces with data base management systems that run
on or interface to IBM PC's. ColorCube is a unique but inexpensive
tool designed to increase a user's productivity by allowing him to
easily (a) view his data from any of three perspectives and (b) quickly
analyze this data graphically by using colors to represent ranges
of data values.
ColorCube's Functionality
With Colorcube, a user can directly extract data from dBase or compatibles,
accept data from other data bases through ASCII files, or directly
extract data from multiple 1-2-3 files and create multi-dimensional
views of the data in row-column-page form. Colorcube converts this data
into a colorbar a page at a time where the row-column cells of the matrix
are converted into colors based on the relative value or rank of the cell.
The user has the option of selecting how the colors are computed, using
the entire set of numbers in the set to represent the range of colors,
the individual page of the set, each row individually, or each column
individually. The display produced is a `contour map' of the data. By the
use of colors, the extremes can be easily spotted, resulting in
quicker decisions.
A Hypothetical Example of ColorCube's Use - Database
A production scheduler needs to compare an existing schedule to an
expected influx of orders. He loads ColorCube and extracts the machine,
day and products from his dBase file on his local computer. He sets
the colorbar to reflect the high 20% in red, the low 20% in green
and the remainder to blue. He then sets the color computation to page
range indicating the color computed for each cell is based on the
displayed page of data. Examining the total product array, he sees
a matrix of machines and the next 14 days. He notices time on several
machines is open, but one machine the VTL is constantly being used
as it appears in red.
Changing the computation to row range to treat each row as a separate
entity, he browses the various products, noticing again that one product,
the flutter valve, requires a large percentage of the machine time
in the VTL which could cause production delays.
He then loads orders not yet scheduled with shipping dates for the
next four weeks, specifically the orders, products, shipping date
and product quantities. Setting Page Range computation, he browses
the individual orders seeing a typical product balance. Switching
to column range to emphasize the shipping date, shows constant scheduled
shipments of flutter valves. Seeing this along with the scheduled
orders, he has identified a major production bottleneck. To alleviate
the problem he schedules a meeting with the plant manager to revise
the flutter valve routing or to purchase another VTL.
A Hypothetical Example of ColorCube's use - Spreadsheet
A marketing manager is analyzing sales of the company's products for
several regions for the past 12 weeks. Her data is stored in 1-2-3
spreadsheets, one for each week, each consisting of a matrix of products
by regions. She loads the 12 spreadsheets into ColorCube, and sets
the colorbar to display ten elements, red for the low 10 percent,
green for the high 20 percent, and blue for the remainder. Browsing
through the data by products she sees the sweatshirt line is the highest
seller for all regions for the entire 12 weeks. Then, through a few
keystrokes, she displays each region showing a matrix of products
for each of the 12 weeks, Noticing that the entire product line, not
only the sweatshirt products, is high for the midwest region,
In only a few minutes, she has analyzed the 12 weeks data in three
different dimensions. Suddenly, she recalls the president saying he
would like to expand operations, but was unable to decide where to
grow the business. With the data in hand, she jots down a few notes
and calls the president's secretary to make an appointment to discuss
her new-found knowledge.
Summary
ColorCube has been designed to be easy to learn and use. It is menu
driven, with on-line context sensitive help. No knowledge of programming
is necessary to use ColorCube. ColorCube allows the everyday user to
consider it a 'must have' and the occasional user to consider it a
'nice to have, just in case' tool.
